400th Anniversary Appeal

[For how to donate please go to end of this page]

Thank you for visiting St. George's on this website. We hope that you enjoy your visit and find (like many others before you) that your experience of the Anglican Church here uplifts your stay in Venice, whether long or short, and helps you to reflect on God's creative activity in the history and culture of this city, and in your own life.

You can help us to go on offering this experience to Venice's many English-speaking visitors. We are maintaining a tradition of Anglican services in Venice going back 400 years. It was in
1604-5 that the first Church of England chaplain came here to accompany Sir Henry Wotton, King James I's ambassador to the Most Serene Republic.

Anglican services have been held in the city ever since (though not continuously), and from 1892 we have enjoyed the use of this dedicated Church building, given to the Diocese of Gibraltar by Sir Henry Layard.

This 400th Anniversary now finds us in need of 500,000 Euros to restore and redecorate the church, and in addition, we have a vision to establish an endowment to provide a stipend for future chaplains to help the expansion of our Chaplaincy work. We are putting on a series of events for the Anniversary, to encourage visitors to contribute to this appeal.

play your partThe permanent Anglican residents of Venice are too few to maintain what has become a resource for English-speaking Christians worldwide. The life of the English Church here, and its buildings, have been dependent on generous gifts from its visitors, and on its chaplains who serve without stipend.

play your partPrevious appeals enabled the purchase and modernisation of the Chaplaincy house where they live; but as you have clearly seen, the Venetian environment is hard on her buildings, and makes constant demands on those who love them, to maintain them! At the same time, the work of the Chaplaincy is expanding into Padova, where there is now another Anglican Church community, with many migrant workers from Nigeria amongst our members.
