MEET OUR PEOPLE
THE CHAPLAIN, Rev. John-Henry Bowden
Rev. John-Henry Bowden has been Priest-in-Charge of the St. George’s Venice Chaplaincy since 30th October 2004. He and his wife, Marilyn, come from Sussex, England. After taking an M.A. at Cambridge, England, in Classics in 1969, John-Henry studied for Ordination through the distance-learning course based at Salisbury & Wells. Ordained Deacon in 1984, and Priest at Advent 1985, he served in several semi-rural parishes in S England, and also in the City of London parish of St. Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside from 1993-1997.
He has always been a Non-Stipendiary Minister and continued to earn his living at his profession of Distribution manager. From 1988 until early retirement in June 2004, this was with the Royal Mail, mainly in central London .
His ministerial roles have all therefore been as Assistant Priest or Curate in a parish until he came to us. “I always believed,” he says, “that the Church needed priestly voices available to listen and to speak to people where they spend most of their time, at work. The Church allowed me to continue with my industrial work in an attempt to contribute to this ministry. At the same time, my continuing intimate involvement in the world of industrial work has enabled me (I trust, with God’s help) to bring alive the Gospel for that world to people when they are in Church.”
John-Henry is married to Marilyn and they have two adult children living in UK.
His interests, in addition to Theology and Liturgy (and Transport of course), include music, sailing and rowing; his present outside ambition is to learn to row Venetian style (standing) and to sail the traditional lateen-rigged lagoon boats.
